We are super excited to welcome Ryan Damico (@Crocodoc) and the Crocodoc team to Box.

If you’re not familiar with Crocodoc, the company’s products are used to drive some of the most important file viewing experiences on the web. Have a resume to view on LinkedIn? That’s Crocodoc. Viewing sales collateral in Yammer? Also Crocodoc. Previewing a file in Blackboard? You get the idea.

Crocodoc’s world class HTML5 file viewer is extremely easy to deploy and provides a beautiful user experience. And this user experience is only going to get better. You can get a sneak peek at the new experience and join the thousands of developers who have signed up for early access here.

By bringing the Crocodoc team and product into Box, we will combine our expansive Content API with an increasingly rich set of tools and services to help power immersive user experiences with content across the Internet.

So, what’s next?

We will continue to develop, improve and innovate on the Crocodoc platform, which will become a strategic cornerstone of Box’s overall platform strategy

We will offer a free version of Crocodoc to go along with today’s paid options

We will deploy Crocodoc’s file viewing tech throughout our current products (our web app, native mobile apps, etc.)

If you’re interested in learning more, you can sign up for a Crocodoc API key here and see the API in action in the Crocodoc test console. As always, we look forward to working with you. Only now, we have more good stuff to share.

We’re hoping April was as fun for you as it was for us here on the Box platform team! Here are the updates on the latest features, changes, and upcoming roadmap for the Box platform. As always, feel free to reach us at api@box.com if you have any questions.

New Features and Improvements

Error codes: The initial release of our new error codes is live. This feature will give you more granular responses when you receive errors from the API. For detailed info, please visit: http://tech.blog.box.com/2013/04/get-developer-hugs-with-rich-error-handling-in-your-api/

Tasks: The ability to use tasks in our V2 API is now in beta. For early access, please contact us.

New WebDAV: We have rebuilt our WebDAV on the SabreDAV framework. You can access webdav now at https://dav.box.com/dav . If you have any apps using the old WebDAV URL - https://www.box.com/dav, please migrate over to the new URL. If you have any concerns about this change, feel free to contact us.

Password Reset: We’re adding the ability to force a password reset for users. Documentation will be rolled out in the upcoming weeks.

New cURL Tutorial: Our very own Nick Lee put together an awesome 7 min video tutorial on how to use cURL with our API: http://developers.blog.box.com/2013/04/08/using-curl-with-the-box-api/

Changes

Folder move changes: Folder owners or co-owners can now move collaborated folders into private folders without receiving an error code.

CORS is now working for uploads. To CORs-enable your app, please contact us with your API key and domains you’d like to support.

Ending Ruby SDK support: We are phasing out active support on our Ruby SDK. If you were previously using it, we recommend you take a look at a great Ruby SDK developed by our friends at attachments.me: https://github.com/attachmentsme/ruby-box

Bug fix: Fixed max_upload_size bug that was returning 0 incorrectly on the /users endpoint

Future Updates

We are forming a platform advisory panel to help shape the future of the API. Membership is limited and not guaranteed, but if you’re interested in joining, please email us and we will be in touch

V1 of our API is deprecating on Dec 14, 2013. Please start making the transition to our V2 API as soon as possible

Support for more file names is close to release. We will be supporting characters such as ” : < > | * ? in file names

We will be updating our subdomain scheme in the near future. Enterprise and business accounts will have the subdomain <enterprise>.app.box.com moving forward. This should not affect your applications as we’ll handle any redirects to the correct URL.

We will be rolling out the ability for you to set a filename through a separate “name” parameter on file uploads. Previous upload methods will still be backwards compatible.

Group functionality is being developed. This functionality will be similar to what you have experiences as an enterprise administrator in our web application.

Changes

Comments changed to a top level resource: http://developers.box.com/docs/#comments

All uploads now handled through https://upload.box.com/api/2.0/files/content . The previous URL, https://api.box.com/2.0/files/content will still work, but we suggest that you migrate off of the old URL in the near future

path attribute changed to path_collection

For OAuth 2, we changed our documentation to always refer to the base URL of https://www.box.com/api/oauth2 instead of https://api.box.com/2.0. However, both will still work in the OAuth 2 process

OAuth 2 was added to our main API docs: http://developers.box.com/docs/

Future changes and upcoming roadmap

V1 of our API is deprecating on Dec 14, 2013. Please start making the transition to our V2 API as soon as possible.

Currently working on adding Groups functionality to the API. This will allow you to replicate many of the standard functions you would see in the web administration console.

Tasks are also in development. This will allow you to assign tasks on files to your colleagues.

We will be updating our subdomain scheme in the near future. Enterprise & business accounts will have the subdomain <enterprise>.app.box.com moving forward. This should not affect your applications as we’ll handle any redirects to the correct URL.

We are working on adding more character support in files and folder names.

The Box platform team’s trip to London this past summer gave us a taste of the bustling tech community, and we couldn’t wait to get back. Last week, we journeyed across the pond for a second round to meet even more companies and developers that can work with the Box platform.

We kicked off the week by sponsoring Dreamstake’s Female Founders meetup at Google Campus. It was intriguing to hear a few of London’s female entrepreneurs shed light on the challenges they have faced in pursuing their ambitions.

Throughout the week, we met people in the tech community of all shapes and sizes – development agencies, freelance developers, entrepreneurs, entrepreneur networks, angels, and government partners. On Wednesday we hosted a lunch with our CEO Aaron Levie at the Boundary. Aaron and Chris Yeh, VP of Platform, talked about what it takes to make a successful software company, and things entrepreneurs should do win the quickly-evolving enterprise space. They might have also engaged in some witty banter on the side.

We met some awesome folks at the event – the Verse.io team, Old St Labs, and HulloMail just to name a few. It was also great to see some familiar faces from our trip last summer. Thanks to everyone else who came out, and to General Assembly for co-sponsoring the event with us!

As London continues to grow as a tech and startup hub, we look forward to being more involved in this community. Give me a shout at rlambert@box.com if we missed you at the Boundary, and looking forward to working with many of you in the future!

As part of our ongoing effort to help developers and customers get ramped up on our API, we wanted to provide a tutorial on how to use Postman. If you haven’t heard of Postman, it’s an easy-to-use Chrome extension for making HTTP requests that can make developing and testing on APIs a piece of cake.

In this short video tutorial, we’ll show you how to install Postman and take 3 simple actions within a Box account: get a list of folders, create a folder, and upload a file. After you see how easy it is, you’ll wonder why you hadn’t used this great tool before!
